Selected Photos:
"GT&A's Excellent 'NDA' Adventure"

(Nov 1-7, 1998 - a very full week!)

Some visual highlights of my travels to California for Red Herring magazine's "NDA" conference, held
in LaJolla, November 2-3. (The event was subtitled: "Secrets By the Sea - The CEO Summit on Technology's Future.")
The photo opportunities were many, quite apart from the event itself. Here's a representative sampling.

(For these to make much sense, you'll have to read my
"Excellent NDA Adventure" report, which also includes a recap of the conference.
You can go back to that via a link at the bottom of this page. You'll also
see a link there to sign up for our list to get future reports.)

NOTE: This page will take a while to load. I decided to put all 14 shots on
one page--as low-res jpegs--rather than make you click through multiple pages.

In Altadena, my host, nephew Mark (left), has a fantastic rose garden...fitting, since he gets
great Rose Bowl seats every year. (Last year, we were on the 50-yard line.) That's my "Industry Standard"
hat he's wearing, which I got at the NASDAQ party in NYC (thanks, Cheryl!). Guy Kawasaki sent me the
T-shirt....great business concept! (Thanks, Guy--but an XXL? How big do you think I am?)

Mark, Gayle & CJ let me use their wonderful, restored Craftsman home as my headquarters when in LA. Mark has
officially dubbed it "GTA West"....and I've to pledged be back -- often! (Especially during the winter.)

The train ride on the Amtrak "San Diegan" was wonderful (though it ended too soon). Many of the views
out the window, this one of the Fullerton station, almost seemed a snapshot from the past.

Once we hit the coast at San Juan Capistrano, the surf was great (dude!).
Wow, what a way to travel...shootin' pictures of the waves, sippin' a Chardonnay.

Arriving at the Sheraton Grande Torrey Pines, the big "NDA" event began the next morning (Monday).
The set (here in progress) was great...not to speak of the program, the speakers, the parties, and the people!
(Gee, I wish I had a shot of that goal I scored in the golf-car polo match!!)

Mark at Scripps Pier, close to the site of the conference -- our first stop the morning after the event,
on the way to a beach just south of here. (After a great Mexican fast-food "surfer's breakfast," that is.)

Here's me, fresh out of the water at LaJolla Shores Beach Park. Gee, this was tough duty.
But we did do some work! (Investment strategy planning flat on your back in the sun is the best.)
The only thing better than the weather here was the fantastic view, all around.

Then it was off to Point Loma, to meet up with my youngest nephew, Joel.
He and a roomate provided the boards, and we headed to Ocean Beach to grab some waves.

"Wet suits are for wimps," I told Joel, as he zipped his up. Hey, all I need is
a pair of shorts, dude. (I didn't even get a leash with his friend's board.)

Off we went into the late afternoon surf at Ocean Beach...which wasn't the greatest.
But, hey, I says to Joel, "The worst wave I ever had was fantastic."

The afternoon was getting late...and I'd had enough. But even the shortest time in the
waves makes the whole trip worthwhile. It was time to go see Joel's campus and then to dinner.

Sunset over the ocean at Point Loma University, with nephews Joel and Mark.
Pretty cool place to go to school--top surfing team in California, too.

A great place to eat in San Diego is Junior Seau's sports bar & restaurant.
(He's a linebacker for the Chargers.) Nephews Joel and Mark look good, huh? -- as they
anxiously await their grub. The "NAU" on Mark's shirt is for Northern Arizona University,
where Joel played Division 1 basketball last year (till he just had to get back to the ocean).

A day and a half later, I was in San Francisco having lunch with my niece Tsia.
She's an assistant to an entrepreneur who has a group of Web sites/companies, including
www.web-radio.com and www.dot.fm. The lunch, at the "Town's End" on the Embarcadero, was great.
The stay was short, though -- I had to tear back down the 101 to catch a flight from
San Jose to Burbank to meet a client in downtown LA. Wow -- what a week!
