Corporate Name Changes:
The name game was played at a fever pitch in 1997,
with a record 185 publicly held companies changing names.
The increase was 46% over 1996 and 20% over the previous
record set in 1987. It was led by financial corporations
at 39 and manufacturers at 33.

Just How Many Names Are Out There?
In 1983, registered U.S. trademarks in the "Scientific and
Electrical Apparatus" classification numbered only about 15,000.
By 1998, that number had grown to more than 300,000!

  • Average Number of Domain Name Registrations Per Month: 108,000
  • Average Number of Domain Registrations Per Day: 4,115
  • Largest Number of Domain Registrations in One Day: 11,465 on June 25, 1997
  • Average Number of New Domain Registrations Per Minute: 2.5
  • Highest Volume Month for New Domain Registrations: 137,360 in July 1997
